ABSTRACT

Social media has experienced an unprecedented boom in recent years and its impact on today’s society is undeniable. Social media has changed the way people communicate, relate and inform themselves. In the academic world, social media has also acquired great relevance, especially in the field of scientific societies. This article aims to analyze the presence of Argentine organizations in the field of nursing on social media. The study included a list of Argentine organizations in the field of nursing obtained from official databases at Ministerio de Justicia y Derechos Humanos. Those organizations (Civil Associations, Mutual Association, and Foundations) whose keywords were related to nursing were selected. 95 organizations in the nursing field were registered, of which only 24 (25,2 %) had a website accessible from the internet. 95 organizations in the nursing field were registered, of which only 24 (25,2 %) had a website accessible from the internet. Only 39 organizations had a presence on at least 1 social network. The results of the study revealed that there is a low presence of these organizations on social media, with only a small percentage having profiles on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube. Additionally, these organizations had a low number of followers on their social media profiles. This highlights the need for these organizations to enhance their social media strategies to increase their visibility, impact, and engagement with their audience. Improving their social media presence can also help these organizations to better promote their research, knowledge, and scientific developments, thus contributing to the advancement of the nursing field.

RESUMEN

En los últimos años, las redes sociales han experimentado un auge sin precedentes y su impacto en la sociedad actual es innegable. Las redes sociales han cambiado la forma en que las personas se comunican, se relacionan e informan. En el ámbito académico, las redes sociales también han adquirido gran relevancia, especialmente en el campo de las sociedades científicas. Este artículo tiene como objetivo analizar la presencia de organizaciones argentinas en el campo de la enfermería en las redes sociales. El estudio incluyó una lista de organizaciones argentinas en el campo de la enfermería obtenida de bases de datos oficiales del Ministerio de Justicia y Derechos Humanos. Se seleccionaron aquellas organizaciones (Asociaciones Civiles, Asociaciones Mutuales y Fundaciones) cuyas palabras clave estuvieran relacionadas con la enfermería. Se registraron 95 organizaciones en el campo de la enfermería, de las cuales solo 24 (25,2 %) tenían un sitio web accesible desde Internet. Solo 39 organizaciones tenían presencia en al menos 1 red social. Los resultados del estudio revelaron que existe una baja presencia de estas organizaciones en las redes sociales, con solo un pequeño porcentaje que tiene perfiles en Facebook, Twitter, Instagram y YouTube. Además, estas organizaciones tenían un bajo número de seguidores en sus perfiles de redes sociales. Esto destaca la necesidad de que estas organizaciones mejoren sus estrategias en las redes sociales para aumentar su visibilidad, impacto y compromiso con su audiencia. Mejorar su presencia en las redes sociales también puede ayudar a estas organizaciones a promover mejor sus investigaciones, conocimientos y desarrollos científicos, contribuyendo así al avance del campo de la enfermería.

INTRODUCTION

Social media has experienced an unprecedented boom in recent years and its impact on today's society is undeniable. Social media has changed the way people communicate, relate and inform themselves. In the academic world, social media has also acquired great relevance, especially in the field of scientific societies. These non-profit organizations are dedicated to promoting research, knowledge exchange, and the development of science. In this context, social media has become an indispensable tool for the dissemination and disclosure of scientific information, as well as for communication between researchers and the scientific community in general.^(1,2)

In this sense, it is important to highlight the relevance that social media has in scientific societies. The dissemination of scientific information through these platforms can contribute to increasing the visibility of research and fostering knowledge exchange among scientists around the world. In addition, social media can be a valuable tool for connecting researchers and promoting collaboration in joint research projects.^(3,4)

On the other hand, social media also allows scientific societies to interact with the general public, which can be beneficial for the dissemination of science and scientific education in society. By using these platforms to disseminate scientific information in an accessible and understandable way for the public, scientific societies can contribute to increasing society's interest in science and fostering the development of scientific vocations.^(5,6)

This article aims to analyze the presence of Argentine organizations in the field of nursing on social media.

METHODS

Sample selection

The study included a list of Argentine organizations in the field of nursing obtained from official databases at Ministerio de Justicia y Derechos Humanos (Inspección General de Justicia).⁽⁷⁾ Those organizations (Civil Associations, Mutual Association, and Foundations) whose keywords were related to nursing were selected, and the resulting list was included in this study and is included in Supplementary Material 1.

Data collection

The names of the organizations were used to search for the existence of social media profiles on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube. The data collection process was conducted between September and October 2022, and the search was performed using the search engines of each social media platform.

Data analysis

The number of followers and other indicators depending on the social network were collected for each organization on each social media platform.

Data presentation

 The results were presented in tables and graphs, providing information on the presence of the organizations on each social media platform.

Data validation

The data collected was verified and cross-checked to ensure its accuracy and reliability.

Ethical considerations

The data for this study were obtained from public sources, both from the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights and from public profiles on social media, so no ethical aspects were applicable, beyond the transparency of data handling.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

95 organizations in the nursing field were registered, of which only 24 (25,2 %) had a website accessible from the internet (table 1).

When we analyzed the correlation between the year of creation of the legal entity and the creation of the website (figure 1), no correlation was found (r=0,1857; p=0,3849; 95%CI: -0,2353 - 0,5481).

Figure 2 shows a negative correlation between the number of social media platforms the organization had and the year it was founded (r=-0,2375; p=0,0306; 95%CI: -0,4311 - -0,02303).

Only 39 organizations had a presence on at least 1 social network (Table 2).

DISCUSSION

We could not confirm that the age of the creation influences the ownership or creation of its website. Park et al.⁽⁸⁾ examines the effect of organizational age on the adoption of web-based information systems in South Korean firms. The authors found that organizational age was not significantly related to the adoption of these systems.

On the other hand, Lin et al.⁽⁹⁾, investigates the reasons why people use social networking sites, including the impact of network externalities. The authors found that organizational age was not a significant predictor of social media adoption.

Yu et al.⁽¹⁰⁾ examines the relationship between organizational age and the adoption of web-based interorganizational systems in Taiwan. The authors found that organizational age was not significantly related to the adoption of these systems.

These studies suggest that the age of an organization is not a significant factor in the creation or ownership of its website or adoption of web-based information systems.

The importance of social media in scientific societies has been widely recognized in the scientific literature.⁽¹¹⁾ In a study published in the Journal of Medical Internet Research, the authors analyzed the presence of scientific societies on social media and their impact on the dissemination of scientific information. The results of the study showed that scientific societies that use social media have greater visibility and a greater impact on the dissemination of scientific information than those that do not use it.⁽¹²⁾

Thelwall et al.⁽¹³⁾ in another study analyzed the relationship between social media presence and the visibility of scientific publications. The authors found that scientific publications that were promoted on social media by scientific societies had a greater number of citations and a greater impact on the scientific community than those that were not promoted.

Furthermore, in a study published in the journal PLoS ONE, Ke et al.⁽¹⁴⁾ analyzed the use of Twitter by scientific societies to disseminate scientific information. The results of the study showed that scientific societies that use Twitter have a greater online presence and greater visibility in the scientific community than those that do not use it.

Limitations and future prospects

The study was limited to the organizations included in the sample and the data collected during the study period. The findings may not be generalizable to other periods or countries.

CONCLUSION

The results of the study revealed that there is a low presence of these organizations on social media, with only a small percentage having profiles on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube. Additionally, these organizations had a low number of followers on their social media profiles. This highlights the need for these organizations to enhance their social media strategies to increase their visibility, impact, and engagement with their audience. Improving their social media presence can also help these organizations to better promote their research, knowledge, and scientific developments, thus contributing to the advancement of the nursing field.
